Elephant 'Loxodonta africana'
Elephant 'Loxodonta africana'
This image represents a personal response to the debates on how to solve the issue of elephant poaching. One suggestion has been to dye the ivory and here, the tusks are woven with a fuschia pink Thai silk floss yarn to represent this.
While looking very three dimensional, this hanging is surprisingly flat. It finds its origins in an original drawing of the African elephant and a photograph of local environmental textures which evoked the weathered skin.
This contemporary textile hanging is hand-woven in cotton and silk floss threads. It measures approximately 70cm wide by 92.5cm long and can be easily hung. There is a tube woven into the top of the artwork and a white solid metal rod feeds through this tube and can be supported on two wall tacks (not included).
